Portland Housing Affordability

Every year the Portland Housing Bureau releases their annual “State of Housing in Portland Report”. In it they give updates to critical housing, demographic, and affordability metrics. This is our effort to take the work that they've done, and create an interactive visualization that allows Portlandians to explore their city through the lense of the city's data. Our goal is to help Portland natives better understand the current housing market city-wide, in addition to where they live.

The information for each demographic in the "Choose a Portlandian" field is sourced from the 2015 American Community Survey, an extension of the US Census. Our tool takes the average income for each demographic group and compares it to the average cost of rent for each housing unit size across all neighborhoods. On average, each demographic household could afford a rental unit in [blue] without becoming cost burdened and spending more than 30% of their monthly income on rent, not including utilities. Those in red would be considered cost burdened" - City of Portland Housing Bureau
